With the likes of Mozillas FireFox and Googles Chrome web browsers dominating the show these days its hard to imagine Internet Explorer ever gaining popularity again, but the latest numbers from Net applications do in fact reflect increased usage momentum when focusing on Marchs usage share data.
This web analytics firm saw IEs usage share climb from 51.9% to 53.8% in the month of March, while surprisingly both FireFox and Chrome saw minor shrinkage in the same period; from 21.8% to 20.6% and 19.1% to 18.6% respectively.
Alongside IE, Apples Safari web browser also saw a jump in usage share, albeit only minor going from 4.97% to 5.07%.
With the above said, IE is still far from being as successful as it used to be. Even when only going back 12 months to March 2011 where its usage share was 58.4% it is clear that overall it has been on the decline, but since December of last year when it hit its lowest point due to Googles Chrome picking up the pace, Microsofts Internet Explorer has been slowly and quietly increasing again.
Theres no doubt when looking at IE9 vs. IE8 Microsoft has notably improved upon its browser with a cleaner user interface, a solid amount of standards support, better security and decently fast rendering, but I think I speak for most of us here in saying once you make the leap away to the alternatives (primarily Chrome or Firefox) theres no going back.
